We are so excited to share the personal story about this months’ member! We love having her as part of our tribe and we hope you enjoy getting to know her a little bit more! Here is our August 2016 Tribe Member Spotlight: Dedicated and Driven….Valerie Comstock!
Give us a little history about yourself. Where were you born? Did you play sports growing up?
I was born in Los Angeles California I am the second of three girls in my family. A little over one year after I was born my younger sister came along and my dad got a job in Riverside so we moved here. I never played organized sports, but I was always active. My parents called me their tomboy. We had two huge fruitless mulberry trees in our front yard that had natural monkey bars on it, and a seat in the middle. If my parents needed to find me they usually sent one of my sisters out to the tree, they knew where I was. I played with the boys in school and if I could have been on a team with them I would have loved that. I loved to play volleyball and was good at it but during high school I was dedicated to theater. I loved stage managing plays and directing.
What is your motivation to work out?
My motivation to work out was when I saw a picture of myself in my classroom and how unhealthy I looked I knew I had to make a change.I used to joke that I loved teaching special education so much that I would die in my classroom, meaning I would do this forever. But after I saw that picture of myself I knew that it could be sooner than later. I have 4 boys two from my first marriage that was a very harmful to me, they are 29 and 25. My husband Kevin and I have 2 boys 12 and 8, my boys are my joy. I want to travel with them and see the world, I can only do that if I take care of me.
How does working out make you feel?
I feel so great after I work out. Some days it is hard to get up and go, but on the days I get up and go to the 5:15 am workout I feel so great! I feel like the day is going to be awesome! Guess what?, it usually is an awesome day!
What are your goals?
My goals are to work out so I am stronger. Since I have Rheumatoid Arthritis I have pain and joint pain daily, but Coach Fatimat understands this and has taught me how to still be able to work out and get the most out of my workouts. This helps me to be stronger so when a flareup happens I can work past it and still function for my family.
What do you do to make sure you have time for your workouts?
I really enjoy the 5:15 am workouts, it just starts my day off right. I sleep in my workout clothes and go to bed early the night before so 4:30 isn’t that hard.
What would you say to someone on the fence about joining the Village?
If you are on the fence about joining the Village just read my story. I was terrified before I came to my first workout because I know me. I didn’t think I needed to workout, I thought I could do this by eating right only. I learned that strength is best to fight off my RA, and to be healthier. I eat right now and am stronger. Plus I get to workout with my friends and have gotten my hubby involved in the Village too. What could be better? At the Village we are a family and we love one another who doesn’t need more friends.
