We are so excited to share the personal story about this months’ member! We love having her as part of our tribe and we hope you enjoy getting to know her a little bit more! Here is our January 2017 Tribe Member Spotlight: Purposeful, Thoughtful and Unwavering ……. Susan Mills!
Give us a little history about yourself. Where were you born? Did you play sports growing up?
I was adopted at birth by two incredible parents in Riverside and grew up most of my life here. I did not play sports as a child but my parents had me take dance, music (played the piano, cello and took voice) children’s theater camping and was an active girl scout. My parents were also active in the community and took me along to serve others.
I just retired after working 36 years in the Riverside Unified School District as an educator at all levels. I am married, have two grown children, three grandchildren and one on the way next month.
What is your motivation to work out?
My mother was before her time and always worked out, did yoga and ate well. She was a good model. Unfortunately, when I was young I watched her but did not participate. Although I have always walked, swam and been active, I have not been intentional about my work outs or my choices of food. I have not set goals or asked for help. I am motivated to work out so that I can keep up with the grand-kids, live a good life with my husband and feel healthy each day when I wake up.
How does working out make you feel?
When I first worked out or when I have been on vacation, I am a slow to start and it is a little tough. But when I am on an intentional schedule, I love working out. I also go to the 5:15 am workouts and people tease me about getting up so early during retirement but it is the best way to start the day. It gets the body going, relaxes the muscles and relieves stress. I now look forward to working out.
What are your goals?
I used to have the goal to only lose a lot of weight. I now want to have a healthy lifestyle. Through this healthy lifestyle modeled in the “little black dress challenge” you live a healthy lifestyle of working out , lose weight, lose inches and adapt an eating program designed to keep you fueled.
What do you do to make sure you have time for your workouts?
I make sure that the boot camp times are at the beginning of the day. This way nothing gets in the way. You then work out and can start the day feeling good about yourself and on point for your goals and healthy eating.
What would you say to someone on the fence about joining the Village?
Join now. Take one day at a time and make friends in the village. I am motivated by the people that come to boot camp. I also go two times a week with a more structure team training where coach works on some areas where I need to improve my strength. This “village” group of people is unique in the ways that they all support each other to be successful, motivate and learn healthy habits. It has been life changing for me.
We LOVE you, Susan and are so grateful to have YOU in our Village Tribe. Thank you for sharing your story with all of us.
