November Member Spotlight – Motivated and Strong – Sandra Garcia




We are so excited to share the personal story about this months’ member! We love having her as part of our tribe and we hope you enjoy getting to know her a little bit more! Here is our November 2016 Tribe Member Spotlight:  Motivated and Strong…. Sandra Garcia!

Give us a little history about yourself.  Where were you born? Did you play sports growing up?

I was born in Long Beach, CA but I grew up in Moreno Valley and went to school in Riverside. I played Volley Ball and Basketball when I was in school. I have worked in education for 10 years as a Math teacher and High School Counselor, in Moreno Valley and Temecula.

What is your motivation to work out?

My motivation to work out is to feel better both mentally and physically throughout the day. On the days that I work out, I start the day feeling accomplished and know that I will have a productive day. When my alarm goes off in the morning and I don’t want to get up, I think about how disappointed I will be in myself if I don’t go and how good I will feel if I do. I also remind myself that I signed up for the class and a spot has been reserved for me so it wouldn’t be fair for people on the waiting list if I didn’t show up and wasted that spot. So, accountability is a big motivator for me as well.

How does working out make you feel?

I always feel so much better after I work out. I feel stronger, healthier and am proud of the little things that I have achieved. I can hold a plank much longer, I can run much farther, I can actually do pushups now and I can do burpees without feeling like I am going to throw up!!

What are your goals?

Initially my goal was to lose weight, which I am still working on. However, I love the strength and endurance that I have gained in the process. A specific goal that I would like to accomplish would be completing a 10k without walking any of it. I was able to do this when I was younger, so I know that I can do it again, and I feel confident that I am already within reach of accomplishing this goal very soon.

What do you do to make sure you have time for your workouts?

I am normally a night owl so working out at night just seemed to always make sense for me. The problem is that throughout the day, life happens, and I would end up making too many excuses or there would be too many schedule conflicts to keep a consistent workout schedule. For this reason, I started attending the 5 am workouts since I have no time for excuses that early in the morning, and everyone else is asleep so it doesn’t conflict with anyone else’s schedule.  Most of the time, I show up half asleep so by the time I am fully awake and realize I don’t want to work out, it’s too late because I am already half way done with it!!

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining the Village?

I think that everyone should definitely give it a try. For me, the accountability of signing up for classes and scheduling it into my day is a big part of getting me to show up. Once I am there, I always find motivation to push myself as I see the strength and progress of everyone around me. The energy there is very positive and supportive so anyone that feels like the gyms are not welcoming, would definitely find the Village to be a perfect fit.
